Burnout
„Burnout is a process of depletion, an exhaustion of physical and mental reserves.“
Herbert Freudenberger, New York, 1974
A burnout syndrome is a state of explicit emotional and/or physical exhaustion which brings reduced performance. It often starts with idealistic enthusiasm and goes over frustrating experiences to disillusionment and apathy, psychosomatic illnesses and depressions or agressivity as well as an increased risk of addiction. Burnout can strike at all levels of society – students, academics, unemployed and retired people have been know to fall ill from it.
